Ralf Little says The Royle Family etched itself into cultural history for good reasons
When it first aired, the show broke numerous rules of what a traditional sitcom could be.
Most of the story unfolds inside the Royles’ living room, with the main cast—Little, Ricky Tomlinson, Sue Johnston, Caroline Aherne, and Craig Cash—sprawled in front of the TV as the action unfolds.
The series was produced without a live audience and without a laughter track, a choice that heightened its sense of realism and intimate atmosphere.
As the program gained momentum, it moved to BBC One and went on to win a wide array of awards, including multiple BAFTAs.
Little reflects on his place in the show’s legacy: “I don’t want to sound arrogant, but I feel like I’m part of something that has become part of cultural history.
People sometimes ask if I’d rather not revisit it, but it’s a privilege to be able to talk about something I helped create.”
