The A's rotation is heating up with a fierce competition for starting spots! With two positions up for grabs, the race is on for these young pitchers to prove their worth.
Manager Mark Kotsay has set the stage, declaring an 'open competition' for the final two roles in the rotation. While veterans Luis Severino and Jeffrey Springs are locked in, the remaining spots are wide open.
Among the returning starters, only Springs and Severino reached the 100-inning mark last season. Jacob Lopez led the way with 92 2/3 innings, followed by a group of young arms eager to make their mark.
Luis Morales, a 23-year-old with a promising future, boasts a 3.14 ERA in his first 48 2/3 MLB frames. However, his strikeout and walk rates leave room for improvement, and his fly-ball tendency could be a concern.
Then there's Jacob Lopez, a soft-tossing lefty who turned 28 during Spring Training. Despite a lower ceiling, Lopez impressed in his rookie season with an above-average swinging strike rate. However, his reliance on fly balls and a lack of velocity could be a double-edged sword.
But here's where it gets controversial... J.T. Ginn, with his impressive strikeout and ground ball rates, could be the dark horse in this race. Ginn's performance at home and on the road suggests he might be better suited for a different role.
And this is the part most people miss... the A's have some intriguing prospects in the minors, including Gage Jump and Jamie Arnold, who could surprise everyone and break camp.
