A tragic event has unfolded in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, where a school shooting has left at least nine people dead and 25 others injured. In a shocking turn of events, the individual believed to be the shooter has also been reported dead.
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), there were numerous victims involved in the incident that took place at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, which caters to students from Grades 7 through 12. The authorities quickly issued an emergency alert regarding an active shooter situation at the school, prompting immediate concern among the community.
Upon entering the premises, officers discovered six deceased individuals within the school. Tragically, two additional victims were located at a different site, and yet another lost their life while being transported to the hospital. The active shooter alert was ultimately lifted at 5:46 PM PT. Initially, the suspect was described as a woman dressed in a dress with brown hair, which added to the confusion and fear in the community.
In a social media announcement, School District 59 acknowledged the lockdown procedures implemented at both Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and the nearby Tumbler Ridge Elementary School. Just after 5 PM PT, the elementary school communicated that they could begin releasing students to their parents or guardians. However, both educational institutions will remain closed for the rest of the week as a precautionary measure.
Emergency Health Services from surrounding regions also responded to the scene, with STARS Air Ambulance from Alberta confirming they dispatched a crew from Grande Prairie to assist, although they did not transport any patients.
In a heartfelt statement released on Tuesday afternoon, the District of Tumbler Ridge expressed its sorrow over the distressing incident, stating, "Our hearts go out to all those impacted, recognizing that many residents may feel shocked and overwhelmed." They expressed gratitude towards the rapid response of local emergency services and indicated that additional support is either already present in the community or on its way.
The district added, "In the coming days, we understand this will be a challenging time for many to process. Please look out for one another, utilize available support systems, and remember that Tumbler Ridge is a resilient and compassionate community. Together, we will navigate through this tragedy."
The situation has caused significant concern among the residents of Tumbler Ridge, prompting police to advise them to stay indoors while they manage the active shooter situation. Community members are understandably shaken, with one long-time resident recalling how he immediately locked his doors upon hearing the news, only to later learn that a family member had been injured in the incident.
Larry Neufeld, the MLA for Peace River South, announced he would return to his constituency immediately, emphasizing the importance of public safety. He stated, "I have been in direct contact with the Solicitor General for updates and to ensure all necessary provincial resources are available to support local law enforcement and emergency responders.
